(January 21, 2014) - Today, The New Hampshire House Commerce Committee held a public hearing on HB 1589, mandating all private gun sales to require a background check. Citizens for a Strong New Hampshire testified in opposition to this bill.
Matthew Murphy, Director at Citizens for a Strong New Hampshire, testified to the following:
"We strongly believe that this legislation will not have any effect on criminal activity or violent crime and will only hurt law abiding gun owners and their families. It is already a federal felony for any private person to sell, trade, give, lend, rent or transfer a gun to a person you know or should have known is not legally allowed to own, purchase or possess a firearm. The penalty for selling a gun to a person who is a criminal, mentally ill, mentally incompetent, alcohol abuser or drug abuser is a 10-year federal felony. That's the current law.
Citizens for a Strong New Hampshire encourages that we vigorously enforce laws already on the books and prosecute those that violate current federal law that make it a crime to falsify information on background check applications and for straw purchases. We believe that this would have a greater effect in preventing the purchasing of firearms by criminals."
