Release: Will Maggie Hassan Stand By Her Support for Sanctuary Cities in New Hampshire?
MANCHESTER - Citizens for a Strong New Hampshire today called on Governor Maggie Hassan to take a strong position against deadly and dangerous so-called "sanctuary cities." Hassan has previously supported sanctuary cities: As a State Senator, Maggie Hassan voted to kill a bill that would have outlawed sanctuary cities in New Hampshire.
Last month, an illegal immigrant in Philadelphia was arrested for raping a child under the age of 13. Ramon Aguirre-Ochoa came to the United States illegally, was deported in 2009, and then again illegally reentered the country. The police apprehended him and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) asked the police to hold him. However, because Philadelphia is a "sanctuary city" and local officials are prevented from cooperating with ICE, the police released him, and he attacked the child.
Derek Dufresne of Citizens for a Strong New Hampshire released the following statement:
"Sanctuary cities are dangerous. This is a crime that should never have happened, but this is what happens when elected officials fail to do their job. Governor Maggie Hassan has supported sanctuary cities in the past. By doing so, she has blatantly ignored the fact that the first responsibility of government is to protect the safety and security of citizens, which includes securing the border, enforcing the law, and keeping dangerous criminals off the streets.
"When cities become sanctuary cities, government fails to protect citizens. Maggie Hassan owes it to the people of New Hampshire to come clean on her support of sanctuary cities and clearly state that she will protect the most vulnerable among us."
